This week I have decided to analyse the mise-en-scene in a clip from the 1995 movie 'Seven' by director David Fincher. Even though it is not a TV drama, I believe it is a good way of practicing my analysis skills for any time of TV drama that could be presented to me in the exam.

At the beginning of the clip it starts off with a shot off Morgan Freeman in his house. This opening clip is a clear view of his clean, tidy and decorated house, showing him dressing up. His costume is that of a stereotypical detective as he is smartly dressed in a trench coat and hat that we would associate with detectives; this portrays his career immediately and that suggests that the film will be based around the job of a detective and solving/investigating a crime.

We then meet the binary opposition of Morgan Freeman - his co-start Brad Pitt. He is portrayed to be a more youthful, slightly rebellious cheeky detective, opposed to Freeman's serious emotion towards the responsibility of his job.
Brad Pitt is dressed in more casual clothes such as jeans and a leather jacket. This portrays his laid-back and care-free nature towards his profession and the leather (which is usually associated with bikers) suggests his rebellious side.

This scene uses mise-en-scene to portray the binary oppositions in the characters, not only in the way they dress, but also their race, characteristics and personality.  Pairing these two characters together creates conflict between them, which in turn adds a dramatic and tense tone to the scene. Freeman could be referred to a protagonist and the Pitt as an antagonist ,however the audience do not have a fair reason to perceive  either of them as good/bad at this early stage in the movie which creates an enigma, for the audience & the ambiguity foreshadows  further complications between these two characters.

The setting starts off with Morgan Freeman’s house, which comes across as a very neat tidy organised house; this is a complete contrast to the typical thriller which starts off with dark gloomy settings. Then we see a complete different setting of the house where the crime is located. The house the crime took place is in immediately all Smokey, un-decorated and creates a dull, gloomy atmosphere, which is representative of the crime that has just taken place in that setting.

There is non diegetic sound played at the start of the clip where the editing of the writer is shown. The setting is in a hopsital where the camera pans round to a girl sitting on a chair. The music fades out to when she is looking at the pictures. This could connotate to something bad happening to the women who is sat there holding the photographs.
It then cuts to the apartment where the director uses a panning shot to show a person walking through the doors & then a tilt down to a man asleep on the sofa. As someone walks out of the door we can see a close up of the male protagonist's face as he opens his eyes, signifying that the man has something to hide; a reason for pretending to be asleep.

There is then a blast of loud non-digetic, rock music with the sounds of an electric guitar as we cut to another apartment where we can see a use of shot reverse shot as two of the characters have a conversation. There is then a cut to Mercades in a bed where we get a close up of her and then a close up of the man.
The sound is non diegetic because the characters cant hear it, its not in the world of the film. There is asynchronous sound when the door closes as it reflects what can be seen on screen. The loud digetic sound of the door being slammed cuts through the non-digetic music and it fades out. This creates tension as audiences come to understand that the female protagonist is angry, which is re-emphasised by the CU of her face..

Editing was used to add the writers name at the bottom of the page. Props were used ie: sofa, cups etc. To create meaning and effect.
The setting was in a hospital firstly, and then moved to two different apartments. The colours used where dark and gloomy at first, creating a sad emotion, and meaning of the hospital situation. It then changed to brighter colours to show the contrast in the apartment.
The costumes that the characters are wearing are in sync with the colour scheme. For example in the hospital the girl is wearing dark grey clothing to symbolise her mood and the mood of the situation she has been put in. They match the sombre atmosphere and the setting in which she is in. When it switches to the bright apartment the characters appear to be in lighter and brighter costumes. This again could match with their mood which is evidently happy.

What is wrong with the British film industry?

The film industry in the UK produce many box-office hits such as Slumdog Millionaire, the Harry Potter movies and Alien vs. Predator. However it also has many downfalls:
  • ·   There are serious challenges for the industry with new technologies, specifically the emergence of digital as a production and exhibition tool. New digital HD cameras are placing demands on the production workforce to adapt to new shooting methods, from set lighting to new design and make-up demands. All of these changes would be very expensive and will impact on budget cuts from other sectors, such as the cast of the movie.
  • ·   There is a structural weakness in the British film industry in that the production process is too far removed from distribution/marketing and the audience. It is vital that producers understand their market and have a clear idea about who is going to see their films.
  • ·   One of the current problems facing the industry is that skill levels need to be maintained. - “The UK is second to the US in terms of the level of craft skills we have. We need to maintain that. If we do not invest in that through good training but through production, we will lose those set crafts. Once we have lost them, they are very hard to put back into the system.”

One of the most irritating factors for any film-maker would be the piracy that will undoubtedly happen once their film is released.
Many producers will lose out of DVD sales and such, due to the vast amount of pirate copy DVD's on sale. However, even though piracy is well known to be illegal, the film industry is aware that they will never be able to overcome this issue, therefore they must try their hardest to control it as best as they can.

The above article explains the effect of piracy on the film industry.
